Welcome new and returning runners.
We start summer background running the week of June 8. The state track meet is May 29-30 so this gives track runners a short break before resuming regular running. A good background of summer running will make you a stronger, more efficient runner and we have great trails available in Fairbanks. Varsity and aspiring to be varsity runners should build up to consistently run 5 to 6 days per week during the summer. Try to come to runs when you are in town and make it a habit.
We will normally meet at 9:00 am, Tuesday through Saturday. Note on Wednesday, June 10, we will meet at the West Valley track at 6:00 pm for a Running Club North all-comers track meet. These are low key meets. You can do a tempo run for a 3000m or 5000m or an 800 or mile if you are still hungry to run fast from track season. (There is also an all-comers meet at West Valley this Thursday, June 3, at 6:30 pm.)
Here is our schedule for the first two weeks, starting Tuesday, June 9:
Tuesday June 9 9:00 am UAF West Ridge ski hut
Wednesday June 10 6:00 pm West Valley track (all-comers meet)
Thursday June 11 9:00 am Musk Ox Farm, Yankovich Rd.
Friday June 12 9:00 am Ballaine Lake
Saturday June 13 9:00 am Run/brunch-location TBA (volunteer?)
Tuesday June 16 9:00 am UAF West Ridge ski hut
Wednesday June 17 9:00 am Ann's Greenhouse on Sheep Creek Rd.
Thursday June 18 9:00 am Musk Ox Farm, Yankovich Rd.
Friday June 19 9:00 am Ballaine Lake
Saturday June 20 Midnight Sun Run
We'd like to meet at someone's house on Saturdays, for a long run, followed by a light potluck brunch. If you live near nice trails and would like to host us for a Saturday run/brunch please call or email me. (Saturdays June 13, and July 11, 18, and 25 are available.) We won't meet Saturday, June 20, because many will run the Midnight Sun Run.
When you run on your own: Run on trails and grass; run with others; make running part of your daily routine. Change your pace and throw in pickups. Keep track of what you do by marking a calendar or running journal.
Fundraising: We are organizing the Independence Day 5K (Saturday, July 4) and handling the water stops and crossings for the Gold Discovery race on Sunday, July 26, both to raise funds for the team and support the Fairbanks running community. I will send out requests for volunteers for both as the times draw closer.
Volunteer opportunity: We are in immediate need for a volunteer with a gift for numbers to take over as treasurer of the West Valley XC booster club account. Sally Scrip has graciously been serving as treasurer for three years and is ready to move on. Treasurer involves managing one credit union savings/checking account, writing checks for team expenses and handling the deposits and payouts for the bike swap each spring. Anyone interested, please contact me.

Hello West Valley Runner:
Welcome new and returning runners to West Valley Cross Country. We encourage anyone interested in running to join us to get in shape, have fun, and challenge themselves. At the varsity level, West Valley has a strong competitive tradition: the girls’ team was Alaska State 4A champions in 2009, and the boys’ team was state champions in 2012 and 2013. Both varsity teams have high goals for 2015.
Season Schedule. The first official practice is Wednesday, July 29, 2015, at 9:00 am at West Valley. We will have an introductory meeting on Tuesday, July 28, at 5:30 pm, to answer questions, complete paperwork, and watch a required video on Tobacco/Alcohol/Drug (TAD) policy. Cross country races start August 15, and will be weekly until the state championships October 3.
Summer Running. We meet 5 days a week during the summer. These runs are informal and voluntary. There will usually be one quality workout a week but most runs are an opportunity to enjoy running with others and have fun. New runners should run three to four days a week to prepare for workouts in August. Run with someone; enjoy the trails. Swimming and biking are good cross training.
Physicals/Paperwork. You MUST have a sports physical on file to attend official practices starting July 29. Physicals are available at local health clinics. Also required: activity consent form, concussion policy form, and TAD video form. Forms are available at the school office and at the meeting July 28.
Money. We pay our own expense for team travel. This fall we will have trips to Soldotna and Palmer for invitational races, open to everyone on the team. Runners will also have the opportunity to travel to Portland, Oregon, to run in a large invitational meet in October. The trips cost money. We got a start on fundraising for 2015 with the Beaver Sports bike swap this spring.
Fundraising. The XC team will raise funds for the team and support community runs this summer by organizing the Independence Day 5K race and by staffing water stops and the road crossings for the Gold Discovery Race on Sunday, July 26. Watch for calls for volunteers for these two events. During the season, cross country team members act as crossing monitors for the Equinox marathon, which raises funds and supports the running community. Runners may also collect sponsorships for a media guide to help pay for travel. Sponsorship paperwork will be available July 28.
Communication and Parents. Team notices, schedules, etc., will be sent by email. The XC team has a page on facebook where announcements will be posted. We will have a parent meeting Saturday, August 8, after a time trial, to discuss the season, volunteering opportunities, and to answer questions. Parents, thank you for supporting your son’s/daughter’s participation in Cross Country.
New runners. If you know of anyone who may be interested in running with WV Cross Country please let me know, or bring him/her to a run this summer.
